SOUND & VISION: MGMT + FEVER RAY
6.27.2009
Couple of videos I'm glad I didn't miss. First, MGMT recently released a new video for their totally infectious Kids Oracular track. (I can't seem to get tired of this track. It's got all the qualities of bubblegum: chewy, spiritually pink, sticky after it's been with you for a while...) Anyway, the video stars I can't remember who, but that's not why you should watch it. What brings the whole thing together is the totally sick approach to baby vision. Rather twisted, maybe too much so. Also, not entirely certain that I approve of the crying baby. You gotta wonder how they kept the poor little thing crying for so long. Mind you, the monsters in the video were probably enough for that purpose. Still, some might feel this is not the proper way to use a baby in a video.
Also of note would be Fever Ray's track Triangle Walk. The newly released video mostly features shots of Karin Dreijer Andersson while she's singing, but the arty thing about it is that we never really see her in focus, it's just varied blurry shots and close-ups. Nothing in bad taste or unbecoming, exactly what I'd expect from this exceptional singer. I should write some more about Fever Ray in a latter post. It's probably my favorite album at the moment.
You'll find MGMT's video here. If you're interested, les Inrockuptibles is also showcasing some of the songs of their fortchcoming second album here. It's live, and it's way more rock. Who knows? Maybe the new album will be a very different direction than the first one. And if you're curious, I also found a cover of Kids Oracular by Weezer here. It doesn't feature the almost chiptune keyboard sounds of the original (really my favorite part), but Rivers Cuomo does a pretty good impression of the song. Not too sure that I approve of the Lady GaGa riff that's spliced in the middle, though.
As for Fever Ray's video, you'll find it here.
